Based on the methods in her book, Cross-Examination: The Pinpoint Method, Kyla will break down the skills and processes necessary to craft a killer cross examination. This seminar will cover how to prepare your cross-examination, dealing with different types of witnesses, difficult witnesses, the ethics of cross-examination, and how to elicit all the evidence you need to make a strong case.

Kyla Lee is a prominent criminal defence lawyer and impaired driving lawyer in Vancouver BC. Kyla is known for her knowledge of the Immediate Roadside Prohibitions. She has appeared as counsel in all levels of Court in BC and as lead counsel at the Supreme Court of Canada. She is the author of Cross-Examination: The Pinpoint Method and Immediate Roadside Prohibitions in Western Canada on LexisNexis.

The 4-1-1 on section 490 (Detention of Property by Police)

This seminar will explore section 490 of the Criminal Code and explain strategies for defence lawyers at each stage of the process. Topics will include: how to strategically communicate with investigators; navigating sections 490(2), (3), and (9.1) applications; strategies for pursuing return orders; and the overlap with civil forfeiture applications. The seminar will also address developing areas of the law relating to detention of electronic data, following the judgment in R. v. Teixeira, 2022 BCSC 344.

Garen Arnet-Zargarian is a criminal defence lawyer practicing in Vancouver, B.C., and the founder of Coast Legal. Garen has successfully represented clients at all levels of Court in British Columbia, on charges including assault, sexual assault, impaired driving, drug charges, kidnapping, manslaughter, and murder. Since 2018, Garen has been a Director of the Criminal Defence Advocacy Society in B.C. In his role as a Director, he handles media communications and testified on behalf of CDAS at Parliament in relation to the 2023 bail amendments.
