Proposed Ryerson JD Program (10mins)

In Legal Education by Peter Sankoff1 Comment

Ryerson University has put forth a proposal to open its own law school.  The proposal has attracted a lot of commentary, much of it negative, online – mostly on the basis that “we don’t need another law school”.  I disagree – and here’s why.

  1. I think you’re strawmaning the “too many lawyers” argument. It’s open to disagreement, but I don’t see the alleged inconsistency manifest itself. I would think that those who don’t want new schools to open up for that reason ALSO oppose expansion of existing schools. Just because they have not been able to prevent it, doesn’t mean that they’re not opposed to it. Nothing stopped the opening of Lakehead and TRU either despite significant opposition.
